George Ranch tells the story of Texas through one family's land. Four generations lived and ranched here, beginning with the Jones family in 1824, and the park lets you walk their timeline in order. Start at the 1830s Jones Stock Farm, where life was hard and simple, then move to the Ryon Prairie Home and on to the Davis Victorian Mansion, where cattle money bought porches, parlors and polish. In between, costumed interpreters and ranch hands keep the place working, and cattle demonstrations show how Texas ranching actually ran. It is a hands-on, outdoor day that suits kids who have outgrown museums and adults who like their history with dust on its boots. Public days are limited, so plan around them, and wear real shoes. The ranch sits on FM 762, the same road that leads to Brazos Bend State Park.
What to expect
- Four sites line a 1.25-mile paved loop; a tractor tram circles every 20 to 30 minutes.
- Picnic lunches are welcome but alcohol is not; the Visitor Center sells cold drinks.
- Nearly everything is outdoors, so wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather.
- Pets aren't allowed on the ranch; service animals are welcome.
- Parking is free; arrive by 1:30 pm to see it all before closing.
