Miller Outdoor Theatre is one of the best deals in America: professional performances, free, in the middle of Hermann Park. The idea goes back to 1922, and the current open-air theater dates to 1968, with about 1,700 covered seats and a sloping lawn that holds thousands more. The theater reopened in summer 2026 after a construction project on its entrance and stage, and the fall lineup is packed, including the 47th annual Festival Chicano (Oct 1 to 3), the Accordion Kings and Queens concert (Oct 10), dance, family matinees and a Halloween movie night. Bring a blanket and a picnic for the hill, or reserve free covered seats online for the big nights.
What to expect
- Free covered-seat tickets post online at 10 am the day before the show.
- Unclaimed covered seats go to the waiting crowd at showtime; be seated 10 minutes early.
- On the hill, lawn chairs go left and blankets right as you face the stage.
- Outside food, drinks and alcohol are fine; no glass, grills, smoking or pets on the hill.
- Rain doesn't cancel shows, only dangerous weather; Hermann Park/Rice U rail is 5 minutes away.
