Levy Park shows how much a small city park can hold. The land came to Houston through a 1941 bequest from the estate of Leon Levy, and for decades it was a quiet patch of lawn in Upper Kirby. In 2015 the Upper Kirby Redevelopment Authority and the Upper Kirby District Foundation began a rebuild designed by the Office of James Burnett with Natalye Appel and Associates Architects, and the 6-acre park reopened in 2017. Now there is a Children's Park with a climbing wall, slide and water feature, a dog park with separate areas for big and small dogs, an event lawn ringed by live oaks, a 22,000-square-foot activity lawn and a boardwalk overlook up in the oak canopy. Food is on site at Hearsay Levy Park and Gaspachos Mexican Bites. The free calendar is the draw: yoga and tai chi mornings, Argentine tango nights, Sunset Bingo on second Fridays, and the Howl-o-ween Dog Parade on October 25, 2026, its ninth year.
What to expect
- The park calls its adjacent and street parking free; Kirby Grove garage is paid.
- Shade comes from the live oaks, the skylit pavilion and umbrellas on the east plaza.
- Kids in the water feature need clothes or a swimsuit; under 2s need swim diapers.
- Family restrooms with a changing station serve the Children's Park.
- The dog park closes for cleaning the second Tuesday of each month, one side at a time.
