Marcus Davis, a native Houstonian, opened The Breakfast Klub in September 2001 around two favorites he borrowed from opposite ends of the country: catfish and grits from the East Coast, wings and waffles from the West. The room at Travis and Alabama is casual and loud, hung with modern art and plants, and it fills with politicians, downtown lawyers, church families, students, and Medical Center visitors in the same hour. The wings come fried hard and stacked on a waffle, the catfish sits on a bed of creamy grits, and the coffee keeps coming. Houston Press readers named it the city's best breakfast back in 2011, and the weekend line suggests nobody has changed their mind. Good Morning America and Esquire have since come calling, and it still feels like a neighborhood place.
